A background in taxi driving
Peter came into instructor training with valuable road experience from his previous work as a taxi driver, giving him a strong understanding of everyday driving and road awareness.
Peter Kovacs, from Llandudno, brought years of road experience from taxi driving into his instructor training and successfully passed his ADI Part 3 in Rhyl on 18th December 2023.
Before becoming an Approved Driving Instructor, Peter worked as a taxi driver and had plenty of practical experience on the road.
That gave him a strong foundation in observation, planning and dealing with different traffic situations, but ADI training required a new set of skills as well. Teaching a learner to drive is very different from simply driving well yourself.
Peter worked with Marcus to develop the instructional side of the job, learning how to plan effective lessons, manage risk and help a pupil make progress safely and confidently.
On 18th December 2023, Peter successfully passed his ADI Part 3 in Rhyl, completing the final qualifying test and becoming a fully qualified driving instructor.
Having experience behind the wheel is a useful starting point, but Part 3 is about much more than driving. It is about helping a learner understand, improve and develop independence.

Instructor training meant learning how to turn driving knowledge into useful lessons, using questioning, feedback and structured lesson planning to help pupils make progress.
Peter's preparation focused on combining lesson planning, risk management and teaching strategies in a natural way during real driving lessons, rather than simply rehearsing for the test.

Peter brought strong road experience from taxi driving into his training, then developed the teaching and risk management skills needed to successfully complete ADI Part 3 in Rhyl.
Working as a taxi driver meant Peter was already used to the road, different traffic conditions and making safe decisions in a wide range of situations.
Becoming an instructor, however, required something more: the ability to help someone else understand what to do, why to do it and how to improve step by step.
Passing Part 3 marked the point where Peter had successfully built those instructional skills on top of his existing driving experience and moved into a new career as a qualified ADI.
ADI Part 3 is the instructional ability test and the final qualifying test required to become an Approved Driving Instructor.
A DVSA examiner observes a real driving lesson and assesses the instructor across 17 competencies covering lesson planning, risk management and teaching and learning strategies.
