All about the ADI part 1 theory test.

The ADI Part 1 is the driving instructor theory test. This test is the first of the three tests which you will need to take on your journey towards becoming a fully qualified driving instructor.

The driving Instructor Theory test is set out  in a similar format to the theory test learner drivers need to sit. However there are a few key differences. The most significant differences being.

  • 100 theory Questions.
  • Multiple choice pass mark is 85.
  • Hazard perception pass mark is 57 out of possible 75.
  • Test is in 2 parts and you must pass both the multiple choice and the hazard perception at the same time.

ADI Part 1 multiple choice and hazard perception.

The multiple choice  test will consist of 100 questions. In addition to this the test is broken down into 4 categories.

The driving instructor theory test categories are:-

  • Road procedure ( You will need to be fully conversant on all road procedures )
  • Traffic signs and signals, car control, pedestrians and mechanical knowledge ( You will need to know your traffic signs, and  a bit of Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance.
  • Driving test, disabilities, and the law. ( As an instructor you will need to be up to date on the current rules and regulations.)
  • Publications and instructional techniques ( Teaching methods, instructional techniques)

The pass mark is 85. Thus making it much stricter than the learners theory test.  In addition to scoring 90 marks. You will need score at least 20 out of a possible 25 marks in each of the 4 categories.  This scoring system makes the test a little bit more difficult. For example you may have a total score of 90 but if you have 3 categories with 20 out of 20 and only 10 out of 20 on the other category you would not pass.

In addition to the multiple choice you  need to pass the driving instructor hazard perception test.  Taken simultaneously with the multiple choice.

The hazard perception test runs simultaneously with the multiple choice.

Designed to test your driving awareness skills, this test consists of 14 short video clips. In each clip you need to identify the hazard.

There are 14 clips and all contain at least one hazard with one of the clips containing 2 hazards .

With 5 points for each correctly identified hazard. This makes a maximum achievable mark of 75. You will need to score 57 or more to pass.

Once you have passed you are then able to book your driving instructor part 2 test.

The Theory test is the only one of the qualifying tests which you may have unlimited attempts. When the time comes to take  the part 2 and 3 you are limited to only three attempts at each test. This is the only reason this test is not as difficult as the rest.

When you train with M A Instructor Training you will receive free access to our award winning ADI  theory test program. Accordingly you can use this to practice for this test. The program contains all of the questions in the question bank. Including hundreds of ADI part 1 hazard perception video clips.  Importantly all clips are in CGI format as on the real test.
