ADI part 2 Vehicle Safety.

To be able to teach people to drive and pass the driving test it is essential that you have the ability to drive correctly yourself.
The ADI part 2 test is just that, a test of your driving ability.
The test will last for about one hour and will consist of an eyesight test, vehicle safety questions and a look at your driving technique.

You will be asked five vehicle safety questions in total, three of which will be tell me questions which are asked at the beginning of your test and two which are show me questions which you will need to demonstrate during the drive. These questions are the same questions which you will be teaching your learners in the future. You will receive a minor fault for each incorrect answer. You will receive a serious fault for any loss of control of the vehicle while answering the show me questions.

Your driving ability

Obviously this is the main part of the test and during this test you will be expected to show the examiner all of the following:

Expert handling of vehicle controls

Correct road procedures and lane disciplines.

Forward planning and anticipation of other road users actions.

Driving with consideration for all other road users.

How to judge speed and timing approaches.

You will also need to drive in an eco friendly manner throughout.

Your route will include as many driving and traffic conditions as the area can allow for.

You may be asked to carry out an emergency stop.

Reversing Manoeuvres

These are the same manoeuvres that you will be expected to teach your learners.
You will be asked to do any combination of two of the following.

  • Reversing into a parking bay.
  • Drive forward into a parking bay and reverse out.
  • Pull up on the right hand side of the road then reverse for a couple of car lengths before rejoining the traffic.
  • Parallel parking.
  • Pull up alongside a car and reverse into the space behind it, you must finish close to the kerb and within 2 car lengths of the target car.

All manoeuvres must be carried out with expert precision, whilst maintaining all round observation and showing consideration for all other road users.

At the end of your part 2 test

You will be given the result, if you have less than 5 minors and no serious faults then it will be a pass.
Once this test is passed you can then move on to the ADI part 3 test of teaching ability.

Please note: You may only take 3 attempts at this test, if you were to fail 3 times then you would need to wait till 2 years from the date which you passed your driving instructor theory test at which time you would be able to start the qualification process again. With this in mind it is important to ensure that you take the right training to ensure that you are at the correct standard before taking the test.
