PAUL'S STORY

Taking teaching skills from the classroom to the driving seat.

Before beginning his journey to become an Approved Driving Instructor, Paul worked as a school teacher. Changing career meant learning how to apply his existing teaching experience in a completely different environment.

Driving instruction brings its own challenges. Lessons take place in a moving vehicle, risk has to be managed continuously and teaching needs to adapt to what the pupil is doing from moment to moment.

Paul worked with Marcus to develop the instructional skills required for ADI Part 3, bringing lesson planning, risk management and pupil-centred teaching together during real driving lessons.

He successfully completed his ADI Part 3 in Rhyl, finishing the final qualifying test required to become a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor.

THE JOURNEY

Developing from experienced teacher to driving instructor.

Previous teaching experience can provide a useful foundation, but becoming a driving instructor requires those skills to be adapted to a very different learning environment.

01
A NEW DIRECTION

Moving on from classroom teaching

Paul came into driving instructor training with professional teaching experience from his previous career as a school teacher. The next challenge was learning how those skills could be applied effectively during a driving lesson.

02
DEVELOPING

Adapting teaching to the car

Instructor training involved developing skills such as questioning, feedback, lesson planning and adapting the level of support to suit the learner while maintaining a safe learning environment.

03
PART 3 PREPARATION

Bringing the 17 competencies together

As Paul prepared for Part 3, the focus was on bringing lesson planning, risk management and teaching and learning strategies together naturally during a real lesson.

04
QUALIFIED

ADI Part 3 passed in Rhyl

Paul successfully passed his ADI Part 3 in Rhyl, completing the final qualifying test and becoming a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor.

ADI QUALIFIED
A NEW CAREER

From school teacher to Approved Driving Instructor.

Paul's background in education gave him valuable teaching experience, but qualifying as an ADI meant learning to apply those skills in the very different environment of a driving lesson.

CHANGING CAREER

Teaching experience helped, but driving instruction was a new challenge.

Paul's previous career meant he was already familiar with explaining ideas, asking questions and helping people learn. Driving instruction, however, requires those skills to be used while managing a live, constantly changing road environment.

Developing as an instructor meant learning when to step in, when to let the pupil work things out and how to balance learning with effective risk management.

Passing Part 3 in Rhyl marked the completion of that transition and the beginning of Paul's new career as a qualified ADI.

THE FINAL STAGE

What does passing ADI Part 3 mean?

ADI Part 3 is the instructional ability test and the final qualifying test required to become an Approved Driving Instructor.

A DVSA examiner observes a real driving lesson and assesses the instructor across 17 competencies covering lesson planning, risk management and teaching and learning strategies.
