JESSE'S STORY

Turning professional driving experience into a new career.

Before becoming a driving instructor, Jesse worked as both a bus driver and an HGV driver. He therefore came into instructor training with plenty of experience on the road, but teaching someone else to drive required a very different set of skills.

Professional driving experience can provide a strong foundation of road awareness and planning, but ADI Part 3 is about much more than demonstrating good driving. An instructor must be able to understand what a pupil needs, manage risk and help learning take place.

Jesse worked with Marcus to develop those instructional skills and learn how to turn his own driving knowledge into effective, pupil-centred driving lessons.

In September 2024, Jesse successfully passed his ADI Part 3 in Rhyl, completing the final qualifying test and becoming a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor.

THE JOURNEY

From professional driver to driving instructor.

Knowing how to drive professionally and knowing how to teach someone else are two different things. Jesse's training focused on developing the instructional skills needed to bridge that gap.

01
THE STARTING POINT

A background in professional driving

Jesse came into ADI training after working as both a bus driver and HGV driver. His experience gave him a strong understanding of the road, observation, planning and dealing with different traffic situations.

02
A DIFFERENT SKILL

Learning how to teach

Becoming an instructor meant moving from making driving decisions himself to helping a pupil understand, practise and eventually make those decisions independently.

03
PART 3 PREPARATION

Bringing the 17 competencies together

Jesse's training focused on lesson planning, risk management, questioning, feedback and adapting the lesson to suit the pupil, bringing those skills together in real driving lessons.

04
QUALIFIED

ADI Part 3 passed in Rhyl

Jesse successfully passed his ADI Part 3 in Rhyl in September 2024, completing the qualification process and becoming a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor.

ADI QUALIFIED
A NEW DIRECTION

From professional driver to qualified ADI.

Jesse brought considerable road experience from bus and HGV driving into his training, then developed the additional teaching skills needed to successfully complete ADI Part 3.

WHAT JESSE IS DOING NOW

Teaching automatic driving lessons.

Jesse is now working as a fully qualified Approved Driving Instructor, teaching learners in an automatic car.

His professional driving background remains useful, but his ADI training added a completely different skill set: helping learners understand what is happening, make their own decisions and gradually become safe and independent drivers.

Jesse's journey shows that becoming an instructor can be a natural next career for an experienced professional driver, while still requiring plenty of new learning along the way.

THE FINAL STAGE

What does passing ADI Part 3 mean?

ADI Part 3 is the instructional ability test and the final qualifying test required to become an Approved Driving Instructor.

A DVSA examiner observes a real driving lesson and assesses the instructor across 17 competencies covering lesson planning, risk management and teaching and learning strategies.
