A brief overview of the qualification process
What does it take to become a driving instructor? Your qualification process will consist of 3 tests known as ADI part 1,2 an 3.
Apply to join the ADI Register
The first step is to apply to join the DVSA register. For this you will need to apply for a DBS check. Details on how to apply are here on the DVSA website. Apply to become a driving instructor.
Part 1 the theory test
Part one consists of two separate tests and you need to pass them both in the same session.
The theory is to test your knowledge of the highway code, driving techniques and a little bit of basic first aid. You will also need to know some basic principles of how you will be expected to instruct and coach your future pupils.
Part 2 The Practical driving test
The next part is a practical driving test which lasts around an hour. During this test you must demonstrate a good level of driving which is something which you will be passing on to your pupils.
Part 3 The final test
The final part of the process is the part 3 test which will test your ability to instruct a pupil. You must pass this final test within 2 years of passing the part one. Once you have passed this test you will be a fully qualified ADI and you may apply for your green badge.
Trainee Licence
Once you have passed the part 2 test and completed 40 hours of training you may apply for a trainee licence also known as a pink badge. In effect this means that you will be able to teach paying students. This is the most popular and most effective route to train for the final test. Also it means that you can earn as you learn. The trainee licence will last for 6 months and it is during this 6 months that you will be taking your final exam to become a fully qualified ADI.
Direct Route
It is also possible to continue training without taking the trainee licence option. All the way to taking your final part 3 test. Due to the nature of the recently introduced test format we do not usually reccomend this route.
Franchise
After your training you will be offered a guranteed position as a franchisee of Andrew’s Driving School.
Working alongside one of the busiest driving schools in the area is a great way to improve your teaching skills. You will also earn a very good income and be fully supported as a franchisee.
